An arctic cold front makes its way into Iowa this weekend, bringing gusty winds and colder temperatures on Saturday. Wind chill values of 15 below to 30 below are expected at times. You need to be prepared for the extreme temperatures if you have to be out and about.

In these temperatures, frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less. To protect yourself from frostbite, stay indoors if possible. But if you have to be out, make sure to wear a warm hat, 2-3 layers including a heavy outer layer that will keep out the wind and moisture, warm gloves, and warm shoes. You may even consider wearing a face mask to protect your face from frostbite.
Be sure to check on the elderly, bring in any pets if possible or rig up a shelter for your pets. If you have to travel, make sure to have a cold weather survival pack including blankets, candles, a jumpstart pack if you have one or at least jumper cables, and a power pack to charge your phone in an emergency.
Always stay weather aware!
