Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced the new Lieutenant Governor late Monday morning from her office at the State Capitol building.
Chris Conoyer, a Republican Senator from Le Clair, took the oath of office after the governor introduced her. Cournoyer has been in the Iowa Senate since 2019. She has a technology background and is a self-employed website developer. Cournoyer also works as a substitute teacher. Reynolds listed reasons why Cournoyer is her ideal pick for Lieutenant Governor.
“She takes responsibility, she gets her hands dirty, and she does the work. And the people of Iowa couldn’t ask for more in a Lieutenant Governor. And neither can I.”
Cournoyer made some remarks including how her background meshes with the Governor’s agenda.
“Whether I’m programming software in the private sector or in a classroom with students, or in a committee room crafting legislation, I’m there to do a job. The same is true in the role I’m taking today which involves advancing the governor’s agenda in any way I possibly can.”
Cournoyer replaces former Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, who stepped down in September citing family reasons. Gregg became the president and CEO of the Iowa Banker’s Association shortly after resigning.
