A fisherman’s body was recovered in Rathbun Lake on Tuesday evening.

On July 15 at 10:55 a.m, according to the Iowa DNR, an abandoned 16-foot 1970 Crestliner boat occupied with two dogs and personal belongings was found. The boat was located west of Honey Creek State Park on the north shore.

According to the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office, the 47-year-old California resident was visiting family and friends and has fished at the Lake previously. The fisherman was last seen on the south side near the Rolling Cove area at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

During the search, authorities determined the boat had drifted a mile and a half from the south to the north shore. The Appanoose County Sheriff, Iowa DNR, Rathbun Army Corps of Engineers, and Appanoose County Emergency Management conducted a two-day time period search for the missing fisherman.

On July 16 at approximately 7:00 p.m, officials recovered the missing fisherman approximately 2,000 feet north of the Rolling Cove area in 25 feet of water.

According to Appanoose County personnel, an Autopsy to determine the cause of death will be conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office.

Officials are not releasing the name at this time.
