Mahaska County Announces Aerial Spraying and Temporary Park Closures

The Mahaska County Conservation Board is preparing to begin an aerial spraying project aimed at restoring native vegetation and improving wildlife habitat at several conservation areas.

The woodland restoration project is scheduled to take place November 4 through November 18, 2026. During this period, aerial spraying will be conducted at four locations throughout Mahaska County.

The areas included in the project are:

  • White Oak Conservation Area – South of Rose Hill
  • EverTrue Wilderness Natural Area – North of New Sharon
  • Eveland Access – South of Oskaloosa
  • Quercus Wilderness Area – North of Eddyville

According to the Conservation Board, the project is designed to control invasive honeysuckle, restore native vegetation, improve wildlife habitat and allow younger trees to grow and regenerate. The effort will also help promote healthier, more diverse forests for future generations.

Temporary park closures will be necessary while aerial spraying operations are underway. Because the work is weather-dependent, exact spraying dates and times cannot be determined in advance. Rather than closing the parks for the entire two-week period, officials will limit closures to the time needed to safely complete the spraying.

Visitors planning to use these conservation areas are encouraged to call the Mahaska County Conservation Board at 641-673-9327 before heading out.

The public can also follow the Mahaska County Conservation Board on Facebook for the latest information and temporary park closure updates.
