Van Buren County Extension hosted an Agricultural Safety Day for fifth and sixth grade students from the Van Buren County Community School District on Friday, September 25th in Keosauqua, providing hands-on learning experiences focused on agricultural and rural safety, according to a press release from the organization.

The day began with a live wire demonstration presented by Southern Iowa Electric Cooperative and Access Energy, where students learned about the dangers of downed power lines and electrical hazards. Students then rotated through six educational stations covering a range of agricultural safety topics.

Van Buren County FFA members Randi and Molly led an animal safety station, with Randi bringing a heifer and Molly bringing a mare to teach students about animal behavior, blind spots, and safe movement around large animals. Mason Thomas of Thomas Ag Repair LLC covered power take-off safety and the potential dangers associated with farm equipment. Bryce of Farmers Cooperative Association and Vision Ag LLC shared information about grain bin hazards and safe practices around grain handling facilities. Amanda, a Rural Cancer Prevention and Control Specialist with the University of Iowa College of Public Health, educated students on sun safety and provided each student with a lip balm as a reminder of the importance of sun protection. Andre of Sun and Fun Motorsports in Fairfield and Iowa City used two ATVs on display at the fairgrounds to discuss safe riding practices, age-appropriate ATV use, and the importance of wearing personal protective equipment. Iowa 4-H Youth Program Specialist Maggie led students through a farm and ranch safety lesson, with fellow 4-H Youth Program Specialist Abby assisting throughout the day and engaging students with educational games and activities.

The event was held at the Van Buren County Fairgrounds, with the Van Buren County Fair Board providing the facilities and the Van Buren County Farm Bureau sponsoring lunch for presenters and ice cream for students and staff.

Van Buren County Youth Coordinator LaTisha Scott-Snead said she was pleased with how the day went despite rainy weather throughout. “Despite the rain, students appeared engaged and enthusiastic throughout the day’s activities,” Scott-Snead said. “We are grateful to all of our presenters and partners who helped make this event possible, and we hope to continue offering Ag Safety Day as a biannual event for Van Buren County students.”
