Two Eldon men suffered serious injuries Saturday evening in a Van Buren County crash on Highway 1 north of Keosauqua after striking a deer in the roadway, according to a crash report from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:08 p.m. on October 10th. Both motorcyclists were traveling eastbound when the first rider, Ryan Ray Hickenbottom, 47, of Eldon, struck a deer on his 2017 Harley-Davidson. The second rider, Brandyn Allen Martin, 33, also of Eldon, was riding a 2011 Harley-Davidson and swerved to avoid the deer, resulting in a collision. A third vehicle, a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Terry Ann Kimble, 59, of Mount Pleasant, was also involved but Kimble was uninjured.

Hickenbottom was transported by Van Buren County EMS to Van Buren County Health Center, while Martin was transported by air to the University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City.

Hickenbottom’s 2017 Harley-Davidson sustained functional damage. Martin’s 2011 Harley-Davidson was totaled in the crash. Kimble’s Equinox sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene by officer arrangement.

The report notes that the crash occurred after dark on a roadway that was dry and clear at the time. No citations were issued.
