Jefferson County Health Center Occupational Therapist Kelsey Rubey has been named a 2026 Hospital Hero by the Iowa Hospital Association, one of just 10 Iowa hospital employees selected to receive the recognition this year, according to a press release from Jefferson County Health Center.
Rubey was nominated for the award based on her compassion, professionalism, and dedication to helping others — both in her role at Jefferson County Health Center and beyond. The nomination highlighted a moment when a fellow attendee collapsed during a church service and Rubey immediately stepped forward, performing CPR and providing lifesaving care until emergency responders arrived. Her quick response and calm demeanor in a moment of crisis were cited as a reflection of her commitment to serving others.
Jefferson County Health Center CEO Bryan Hunger said the recognition is well deserved. “Kelsey’s impact extends far beyond her job title. Through her compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the patients of Jefferson County Health Center, Kelsey embodies the values that define Iowa’s healthcare workforce. We couldn’t be prouder to see Kelsey recognized as an Iowa Hospital Hero.”
Rubey said the honor is a reminder of the importance of being prepared. “Receiving this award is an incredible honor. You never know when you might be in a situation where someone needs your help. I am thankful for the training and skills that gave me the confidence to respond in that moment.”
Through her everyday work as an occupational therapist, Rubey helps patients overcome challenges, regain independence, and return to the activities that matter most to them. The IHA Hospital Heroes Awards are presented annually to outstanding hospital employees across Iowa who demonstrate a commitment to serving others and making a meaningful difference in their organizations and communities.
