A Knoxville woman is facing four felony charges after admitting to stealing checks from her roommate’s checkbook, forging her signature, and depositing the funds into her own account.
Amanda Seevers, 41, has been charged with four counts of Forgery, all Class D Felonies, and Theft in the Fourth Degree, a Serious Misdemeanor.
According to court documents, an officer was contacted by a victim who believed their roommate, Seevers, had stolen four checks from their checkbook, forged their signature, and deposited them. The officer and victim went to Marion County Bank, where copies of the four checks were obtained. When initially contacted about the name used on the check, Seevers said that was a relative of hers but denied knowing anything about the checks.
The following day, Seevers sent the victim a message apologizing and stating that she needed to go to jail. When officers spoke with Seevers again, she admitted to forging the victim’s signature on all four checks and depositing the funds into her own account using her cell phone. She said she had taken the checks from the victim’s checkbook when it was left lying on a table. The four checks were made out for $200, $140, $160, and $200 — totaling $700.
Seevers was released on her own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 15th.
