Iowa’s top National Guard official will retire in January after more than 40 years of military service.

Adjutant General Stephen Osborn is scheduled to step down on January 16, concluding a career that included military deployments overseas and leadership of Iowa’s military forces.

Osborn, a Davenport native, began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1984. He later joined the Iowa National Guard in 1992 and served in the Persian Gulf, Kosovo and Iraq.

Since taking command of the Iowa National Guard in 2023, Osborn has overseen nearly 9,000 soldiers and airmen. His responsibilities also include serving as director of the Iowa Department of Public Defense.

Governor Kim Reynolds announced Osborn’s upcoming retirement Wednesday, recognizing his service and commitment to Iowa’s military personnel and their families.

State officials say additional information about the transition to new leadership and plans for a retirement ceremony will be released at a later date.
