The Fairfield Police Department is reminding residents to keep safety in mind as trick-or-treat night approaches Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The department is asking children and parents to stick to sidewalks and use crosswalks when crossing the street, carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing, ensure costumes do not block vision or cause tripping hazards, and have a trusted adult check candy before eating it. Families are also encouraged to stay together, remain in familiar neighborhoods and have a plan for the evening.
Drivers are asked to slow down in residential areas, put phones away and stay alert, particularly between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. when foot traffic increases. Children may dart into the street unexpectedly, the department noted.
Fairfield police officers will also be out in the community handing out candy on Halloween night.
