The Fairfield Police Department is warning residents about a scam in which fraudsters are spoofing the department’s non-emergency phone number and calling people to claim they have an outstanding warrant for their arrest, according to a social media post from the department.
The scammers then demand money to make the warrant disappear. The department wants residents to know clearly that law enforcement will never call or show up at someone’s door asking for money to resolve a warrant. Because scammers can make calls appear to come directly from the department’s phone number, a familiar caller ID is not a guarantee the call is legitimate.
Anyone who receives one of these calls is advised to hang up immediately, not provide any personal or financial information, and not send money under any circumstances. Those who are unsure whether a call from the Fairfield Police Department is legitimate can contact the department directly at 641-472-4146.
