An 86-year-old Fairfield educator is recovering after being struck by a vehicle in a downtown crosswalk earlier this month while walking to morning meditation.

Elizabeth Spanton was struck near the intersection of East Washington Avenue and South Court Street at 6:52 a.m. Oct. 20. Her daughter, Anna Spanton, said Elizabeth was walking from her senior living apartment to the Amma Center when the vehicle struck her in the crosswalk. A Fairfield police log entry recorded a personal injury accident at that time and location. No citations or arrests were made in the incident, and no additional information was provided.

Spanton suffered injuries to her leg and spine — rebreaking her leg and spine, according to her family, who noted she survived a catastrophic car accident decades ago that she was not expected to survive.

Spanton spent much of her career devoted to education, teaching full time until two years ago. She is described by her family as a teacher and lover of life and children who dedicated her life to sharing wisdom with those she taught.

A GoFundMe has been started by her daughter to cover medical costs and to keep family nearby during her recovery.
