Edith Sauer passed away in Pella, Iowa, on October 19, 2026. Edith was born in Kiel, Germany, on February 20,1936, and immigrated to the U.S. just a few days before her 20th birthday. She spent her first years in the U.S. in DeWitt, Iowa, where she met her future husband and fellow German immigrant, Bernhard Sauer, and where she proudly earned her U.S. citizenship.
After a brief time in LeMars, Iowa, Edith and Bernhard settled in Pella, where they spent the rest of their lives. Edith was an active volunteer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa and Peace Lutheran Church in Pella, and worked as a bookkeeper at the Red Ribbon Antique Mall. A highlight for her this past year was celebrating her 90th birthday with a reception at Peace Lutheran.
Edith loved music, all 4-legged creatures, and riding her bike. After coping with Parkinson’s Disease for the past two decades, she is now happily riding her bike around in heaven.
Edith is survived by her husband, Bernhard Sauer; daughter, Gina Sauer; son-in-law, Troy Bader; grandson, Christopher Bader; and four nieces and a nephew in Germany.
Memorial donations may be made to Peace Lutheran Church in Pella or to the Parkinson’s Foundation. A celebration of life will be held at Peace Lutheran Church in December.
