Attorney General Brenna Bird announced today the Iowa Attorney General’s Office Cold Case Unit has been awarded a $15,000 Community Betterment Grant from the Prairie Meadows Board of Directors. The funds will be used for advanced DNA testing as part of investigations into Iowa’s over 400 cold cases.
The goal of the Iowa Attorney General’s Office Cold Case Unit is to partner with local law enforcement and provide fresh eyes and a focused effort on Iowa’s cold cases. This grant will provide advanced DNA testing opportunities that may help bring resolution to some of these cold cases and answers for the families.
“I launched the Iowa Cold Case Unit because no one should get away with murder,” said Attorney General Bird. “I’m grateful to the Prairie Meadows Board for awarding us this grant to offer local law enforcement the option of advanced DNA testing. If these funds bring answers to just one family, to just one community, it will be invaluable for the cause of justice.”
“Investigating cold cases in Iowa takes collaboration and coordination among many partners,” said Steve Ponsetto of the Iowa Attorney General’s Office Cold Case Unit. “Having Prairie Meadows now as part of the team is a win for the people of Iowa.”
