1015 Transit is inviting Ottumwa-area residents and businesses to help brighten the holiday season through its “Lighting Up the Community for Our Veterans” Christmas light and decoration contest.
The contest and fundraiser will raise awareness and support for D.R.I.V.E. (Driving Regional Iowa Veterans Everyday), a program that provides free transportation to veterans in Southeast Iowa.
Residential households within Ottumwa city limits or within two miles of the city are eligible to enter. There is no entry fee, and each homeowner may enter one home. Decorations must be visible from the street.
Entries must be submitted by December 14. Residents can complete an online entry form, pick up a printed form at the 1015 Transit office at 408 East Main Street in Ottumwa, or email secretary@1015transit.com.
A map featuring participating homes will be published December 15. Community members can then vote for their favorite displays through the 1015 Transit website under the D.R.I.V.E. tab. Voting runs through December 27 at 11:59 p.m., with one vote allowed per person.
First-, second- and third-place winners will be determined by the number of votes received. Organizers encourage voters to consider creativity, presentation and holiday spirit. Winners will be announced December 28 at 10:15 a.m. and will receive prize baskets filled with donations from local businesses and community members.
Businesses and Community Members Invited to Donate
Local businesses and individuals are also encouraged to contribute gift cards, merchandise, services, tickets, experiences, holiday items, themed treats and other gifts for the winning households.
Donations received by November 10 can be included in the contest’s final promotional flyer. Additional donations will be accepted through December 14, although those received after November 10 cannot be added to the flyer.
Donations can be dropped off at the 1015 Transit office. To arrange a pickup or drop-off, call 641-683-2024 or email secretary@1015transit.com. Monetary donations can also be made through the D.R.I.V.E. tab at 1015transit.com.
Businesses may also request to have their decorated locations included on the holiday map for viewing, although business displays are not eligible for contest prizes.
Supporting Veterans Across Southeast Iowa
According to 1015 Transit, the organization has invested an average of $150,000 annually over the past five-plus years in its veteran transportation program.
Organizers say the holiday contest is an opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate the season and support transportation services for veterans.
D.R.I.V.E. is recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions may be tax-deductible.
