Paul Versteegh, 96, of Fremont, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026 at Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa.


Paul James Versteegh was born on January 6th, 1930, to Harry Versteegh and Lydia Gosselink Versteegh. Paul grew up on a farm near New Sharon, Iowa, and in 1941 moved northwest of Fremont, IA. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1947. Paul married Edna Louise Pothoven on December 10th, 1950, celebrating 70 years of marriage before Edna passed away in December 2020.


Paul served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict from 1951 to 1953. After his discharge and return to Fremont, Paul started his own company, Versteegh Supply, and built close to 100 custom homes in the Fremont and Hedrick area. Paul was also a long-time member of the Fremont Fire Dept.


Upon retirement, he and Edna spent winters in Arizona. Back in Iowa during the summer months, Paul enjoyed time in his large garden and sharing his bounty with family and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Madge Versteegh, Esther Jacobs, and Vivian Hasty, and a grandson, Taylor Versteegh
Paul is survived by his children Cathy and Darrell Sams of Indianola, IA; Barry and Virginia Versteegh of Cedar, IA; Bruce and Diane Versteegh of McKinney, TX; and Ron Versteegh and Cheryl Wilms of Cedar Rapids, IA. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.


A celebration of life will be held at the Fremont Community Church on October 17th at 10:00 am. Memorials can be made to the Fremont Community Center.
