Lucille Thompson, 88, of Beacon, IA, passed away Monday, September 21, 2026, at the Northern Mahaska Specialty Care Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Lucille Ann Thompson, daughter of Bernard Harry and Edna Viola (Awtry) Loring, was born October 23, 1937, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She attended Oskaloosa High School and graduated in 1956. That same year, she married Robert Simon Thompson on September 29 in Oskaloosa, where they made their home. Lucille’s first job was with Continental Overall Factory. Early on in their marriage, the couple moved to Silvis Heights, IL, near the Quad Cities, and she worked at the Service Rubber plant in Rock Island, IL. They moved back to Oskaloosa in 1958 and returned to Silvis Heights in 1963. In 1964, they returned to the Oskaloosa area permanently. Lucille worked at Tower Park Nursing Home, and in 1979, she began working at C. L. Barnhouse collating sheet music. She retired on December 31, 1999. In her free time, Lucille enjoyed sewing, growing flowers, and collecting dollhouses and their miniature furnishings.
Her family includes her children: Joni Bingham of Knoxville, IA; Rick (Jill) Thompson of Oskaloosa; and Connie (Ron) Lanphier of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Ryan (Karen) Thompson; Jeff (Sarah) Lanphier; Brent (partner Justin) Lanphier; Tyler (Ana) Lanphier; Jacob (Kali) Thompson; and Slater (Taylor) Thompson; two granddaughters: Sadi (Levi) Hawk; and Aby (Kadin) Gerard; and seven great-grandchildren: Nathan (Tori) Thompson; Addison Lanphier; Hayden Hawk; Eva Lanphier; Dylan Thompson; Newt and Jasper Thompson, and one great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by her brother: Glenn Stigers of Rose Hill, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jerry and Sharon Thompson, Easman and Becky Poe, and Margaret Gorman, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her husband in 2017 and by twelve siblings: Melvin, Estel, Dale, and Roy Stigers; Eathol Piper; Letha Nielsen; Opal Kitzman; Fern Roberts; Laura Awtry; Elsie Caves; Marilyn Steele; and Naomi Roberts.
As was her wish, Lucille has been cremated and a memorial gathering and burial of ashes will occur at a later date in Beacon Cemetery.
