Rising rivers continue to cause flooding and road closures in parts of southeast Iowa following heavy rainfall over the weekend. The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities issued several flood warnings Sunday, with flooding reported along the English, Iowa, Cedar and North Skunk rivers.
Residents in affected areas are being urged to stay away from flooded roads and avoid moving barricades placed to restrict traffic.
Flooding Impacts Several Area Rivers
The English River near Kalona has experienced significant flooding, with the river reaching its highest level since 2019. Water has spilled onto several rural roads, including 130th Street, Kiwi Avenue, Orange Avenue and Poplar Avenue. Agricultural land near the river remains underwater, and flooding has extended into the north side of Kalona.
As of Monday morning, the English River stood at 17.9 feet, nearly four feet above its 14-foot flood stage. The river reached a maximum level of 18.6 feet during the previous 24 hours before beginning to fall.
Other rivers across the region are also being monitored:
- Iowa River near Lone Tree: The river was at 15.9 feet Monday morning, with a projected crest of 16.8 feet. Flood stage is 16 feet.
- Cedar River near Conesville: The river stood at 14.4 feet Monday morning, above the 13-foot flood stage. The warning covers areas in Louisa and Muscatine counties.
- North Skunk River near Sigourney: The river reached 18 feet early Monday, two feet above its 16-foot flood stage.
