Wapello County residents will soon have a decision to make on the future of the county jail.
The Wapello County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to move forward with plans for a bond measure that could provide nearly $45 million for a jail expansion. Two proposals are currently under consideration, with the final option expected to be selected by the board later this month.
One proposal would cost approximately $37.5 million and increase the jail’s capacity by about 136 beds. The larger proposal, estimated at nearly $45 million, would provide approximately 168 additional beds.
Wapello County Sheriff Don Phillips says the need for additional space comes with a significant ongoing expense. He says the county is currently spending nearly $700,000 each year to house inmates in other facilities.
If voters approve the bond, property taxes would increase. A county-commissioned study estimates the annual impact could range from about $50 on a $50,000 home to just under $400 on a $400,000 home, depending on which proposal is ultimately selected.
The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to decide which plan will move forward during its August 25 meeting. The measure must then be submitted to the state auditor by August 26 to appear on the November 3 ballot.
Additional opportunities for residents to hear more about the proposals and provide public comment will be available before the board makes its final decision.
