The vice president of Nebraska-based Moving Parts, LLC says his expectations are for an average U.S. corn crop this year.
Scott Custard tells Brownfield, “We’ve kind of made it through corn pollination in decent shape. That next two to four weeks are going to be critical for grain fill. There are areas in the West that are going to need some rain here pretty quickly. In the East, we’re hearing better things, but I would say it looks to be kind of an average crop.”
Custard says the world has plenty of corn on hand, so even an average crop well below last year’s record isn’t likely to have much market impact. However, he says August weather is also going to be key for soybean production.
“We’re just about 47% setting pods.” He says, “So again, we’re gonna be watching the weather reports pretty closely. We’re still probably gonna have a soybean crop that’s a bit snug at the end of next year.”
Custard says those relatively tight ending stock expectations, coupled with recent purchases by China, are expected to continue to offer support to the soybean market.
