Hot and humid conditions are expected across eastern Iowa and western Illinois this afternoon, with heat indices approaching 100 degrees in many locations.
The National Weather Service says the greatest heat concerns will be along and south of the Interstate 80 corridor, where heat indices are expected to reach 95 to 100 degrees during the afternoon. Some localized areas could briefly see heat indices climb above 100 degrees during the mid to late afternoon.
Counties included in the advisory area are:
Iowa: Johnson, Cedar, Clinton, Muscatine, Scott, Keokuk, Washington, Louisa, Jefferson, Henry, Des Moines, Van Buren and Lee.
Illinois: Whiteside, Rock Island, Henry, Bureau, Putnam, Mercer, Henderson, Warren, Hancock, McDonough, Scotland and Clark.
Cities included in the affected area include Iowa City, Marengo, Tipton, Clinton, Muscatine, Davenport, Bettendorf, Sigourney, Washington, Wapello, Fairfield, Mount Pleasant, Burlington, Keosauqua, Fort Madison, Sterling, Moline, Rock Island, Geneseo, Princeton, Hennepin, Aledo, Oquawka, Monmouth, Carthage, Macomb, Memphis and Kahoka.
Residents spending time outdoors should take precautions during the hottest part of the day. Drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, and avoid prolonged strenuous activity during the afternoon.
Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, as temperatures inside vehicles can become dangerously hot very quickly.
