Four Des Moines residents have been charged in connection with Tuesday morning’s armed robbery at the Kwik Star in Oskaloosa, according to an updated media release from the Oskaloosa Police Department.
As previously reported by Ottumwa Radio, three individuals entered the Kwik Star at 1510 A Avenue West at approximately 10:58 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11th with their faces concealed. At least one displayed what appeared to be a firearm. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the area. No injuries were reported.
The following four individuals have been charged as a result of the investigation:
Cory Hale, 26, of Des Moines, is charged with Robbery in the First Degree, a Class B Felony, and Theft in the First Degree, a Class C Felony.
Donavon Surrette, 24, of Des Moines, is charged with Robbery in the First Degree, a Class B Felony, and Theft in the First Degree, a Class C Felony.
Eugene Hale, 19, of Des Moines, is charged with Robbery in the First Degree, a Class B Felony, and Theft in the First Degree, a Class C Felony.
Kayla Rupp, 28, of Des Moines, is charged with Robbery in the First Degree, a Class B Felony, and Possession of Marijuana, First Offense.
All four individuals are currently being held without bond.
The Oskaloosa Police Department noted that the investigation required a significant amount of work behind the scenes, with officers and investigators working to follow leads, collect and evaluate evidence, coordinate with assisting agencies, and build a thorough case. The department said its priority was to conduct the investigation properly and completely rather than release information quickly.
The investigation remains active, with investigators continuing to follow leads and conduct additional investigative work. Some details are being withheld to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The Oskaloosa Police Department expressed appreciation to the numerous agencies that assisted throughout the response and investigation, including the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and Reserve Deputies, Mahaska County 911 Communications Center, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Mahaska County Emergency Management and CERT, Iowa State Patrol personnel from multiple districts, New Sharon Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Poweshiek County Emergency Management, Oskaloosa Fire Department, Mahaska Health Ambulance Service, Iowa Department of Transportation, and Mahaska County Secondary Roads.
The department also thanked community members who stepped forward during the incident to assist others, saying their actions reflected the very best of the Oskaloosa community.
