A Southeast Iowa man is facing multiple charges after allegedly striking a Fairfield Police officer in the face while being taken into custody Friday evening.

Bowe James Cook, 33, of Winfield has been charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, an aggravated misdemeanor; Interference with Official Acts, a simple misdemeanor; and Assault — General, a simple misdemeanor.

According to court documents and a press release provided by the Fairfield Police Department, officers were dispatched to Waterworks Park at approximately 5:31 p.m. on July 3rd in reference to a report of harassment and an assault involving Cook, with assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. A witness told officers that Cook had struck her boyfriend during a verbal argument, and that as she and her boyfriend were leaving the area, Cook threw a stick that struck her in the face.

Officers located Cook at a residence in the 800 block of North B Street in Fairfield shortly after. Upon making contact, officers determined Cook had an active felony warrant for his arrest. According to court documents, when an officer attempted to place Cook in handcuffs, Cook pulled away and struck the officer on the left side of his face with a closed fist, knocking the officer’s eyeglasses off. Other officers on scene were able to restrain Cook and secure him in handcuffs. The officer who was struck did not require medical treatment.

Cook was transported to the Jefferson County Jail and was also served with his outstanding felony warrant. He is being held on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 14th.
