August 6 marks Hiroshima Day, commemorating one of the most significant and devastating events in world history.
On August 6, 1945, during the final weeks of World War II, the United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay released the uranium bomb known as “Little Boy,” causing widespread destruction and an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 deaths by the end of the day. Tens of thousands more later died from injuries and radiation-related illnesses.
Three days later, on August 9, 1945, a second atomic bomb, “Fat Man,” was dropped on Nagasaki, resulting in tens of thousands more deaths.
Facing overwhelming destruction, Japan announced its surrender on August 15, 1945, formally ending World War II when the surrender documents were signed on September 2, 1945.
Today, Hiroshima Day serves as a time to remember the victims of the atomic bombings, reflect on the human cost of war, and promote global efforts toward peace and nuclear disarmament.
