Residents in southwestern Van Buren County should remain alert this morning as a slow-moving thunderstorm continues to produce heavy rainfall and localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm was located near Milton around 9:38 a.m. Friday and is expected to impact the area through approximately 10:45 a.m. CDT. The storm has remained nearly stationary, allowing heavy rain to fall over the same locations for an extended period.
Communities that could be affected include Keosauqua, Milton, Cantril, Keosauqua Airport, Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, and Lake Sugema Campground.
Radar estimates indicate 1 to 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with another 1 to 2 inches possible if the storm persists. The additional rainfall could lead to ponding on roads, minor flooding, and temporary closures of low-lying or waterfront areas.
Motorists are urged not to drive through flooded roadways. Even shallow water can hide dangerous conditions and make roads unsafe. Anyone outdoors should seek shelter inside a sturdy building until the storm passes.
The National Weather Service warns that if the heavy rainfall continues, a Flash Flood Warning may become necessary. Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest weather updates and report any flooding to local law enforcement.
