An Ottumwa woman is accused of driving drunk with a minor in the vehicle last week.

Ebony Chambers, 35, was charged with child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor, and operating while intoxicated – first offense, a serious misdemeanor.

The Ottumwa Police Department says a gas station employee reported an intoxicated driver on July 23rd. Officers pulled over the suspected driver, later identified as Chambers, on Elm Street. Court records say Chambers displayed a strong odor of alcohol on her person, extremely bloodshot, watery eyes, and a very unsteady gait. According to police, Chambers’ 13-year-old son was also in the car.

Chambers allegedly told officers she was drinking at a friend’s house before stopping at a gas station. Court documents say Chambers admitted to consuming 10 shots of alcohol and being intoxicated to the point of being an unsafe driver. Chambers was administered a Field Sobriety Test that showed signs of impairment and submitted to a breath test via Datamaster, which revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.206%, according to court filings.

Chambers was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. She was later freed after posting bond.

Chambers has an initial court appearance scheduled for July 28th.
