The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines is warning Iowans to prepare for the potential of heavy rainfall, localized flash flooding, and isolated severe thunderstorms from tonight through early Friday.
According to the latest weather briefing, periods of heavy rain could lead to ponding on roadways and flash flooding, particularly in urban and low-lying areas across much of central Iowa. Residents are encouraged to use caution if traveling during periods of heavy rain and never drive through flooded roadways.
While the greatest threat for severe thunderstorms tonight is expected across western Iowa, the severe weather risk will shift into southeast Iowa Friday afternoon. Isolated severe storms may produce damaging winds, hail, and additional heavy rainfall.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring conditions and plans to issue its next weather briefing by approximately 4 p.m. today.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware, monitor the latest forecasts, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
