The National Weather Service in Des Moines is urging Iowans to prepare for dangerous heat and several rounds of potentially severe thunderstorms expected to impact much of the state from today through Saturday.
Forecasters say hot and humid conditions will combine with an active weather pattern, creating the potential for damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, and isolated tornadoes during multiple rounds of storms. The greatest threats will vary by day, so residents are encouraged to stay weather aware and monitor the latest forecasts.
With the heat continuing through the holiday weekend, officials recommend limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and checking on elderly neighbors, children, and pets.
The National Weather Service has released a detailed weather briefing outlining the expected timing and hazards. The briefing is available online at the National Weather Service Des Moines website.
