Heat, Severe Weather Through Thursday

The National Weather Service in Des Moines is urging Iowans to prepare for dangerous heat and multiple opportunities for severe weather through at least Thursday.

Extreme heat and high humidity are expected to impact much of Iowa today, with the greatest heat threat shifting to southern and southeastern Iowa on Thursday. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, so residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable family members, neighbors, and pets.

In addition to the heat, severe thunderstorms are possible. The greatest risk for storms is expected across the northern half of Iowa late this afternoon and tonight, with the threat expanding to much of the state on Thursday. Strong winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, and isolated tornadoes may be possible depending on storm development.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts, have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, and be prepared to take action if severe weather develops.

The latest weather briefing is available from the National Weather Service at weather.gov/media/dmx/DssPacket.pdf. Additional severe weather information can be found at National Weather Service Des Moines Decision Support Services.
