Fairfield Mayor Connie Boyer raised a community concern at Monday’s city council meeting on July 27th about the reported misuse of nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas — in Fairfield, saying she has been contacted by a resident about the issue and that the city is now researching its options.
Boyer said a community member reached out to her about nitrous oxide becoming a problem in Fairfield and asked whether the substance could be banned locally. She noted that the drug has reportedly been banned in other large cities where misuse had become a significant issue. “I’m just communicating that to the community and we’re going to be doing some research on it,” Boyer said. “It sounds like that it’s become a problem for some people and we’re going to research and see what the options are if there are any options.”
Boyer said she is asking the resident who raised the concern to do additional research and welcomed any input from the public on the issue. No formal action was taken at Monday’s meeting, but the mayor indicated the city intends to look into what legal tools, if any, are available to address the situation.
