A project years in the making is finally becoming a reality in Fairfield. After approximately three years of planning, fundraising, and organization, work has begun on a mural at the 2nd Street railroad underpass, according to Fairfield City Engineer and Public Works Director Melanie Carlson.

The Volunteer Center has led the effort to organize the project and secure the funding needed to bring it to life. Centered on the theme “Bloom and Grow,” the design features a whimsical landscape spanning both railroad bridge pillars. Artist Jenny Sammons is bringing the vision to life, with Partner Construction handling the prep work including washing, sandblasting, and priming the surface.

Once complete, the mural is expected to create a welcoming new gateway into downtown Fairfield. The work is anticipated to take four to six weeks.
