An agronomist is encouraging growers to remain diligent about scouting as hot, humid weather picks up this week.
Doug George with Bayer tells Brownfield June conditions remind him of the growing season of 2021, which had a lot of tar spot damage.
“If you track some weather conditions that we had in June of 2021, as far as even like frequency of rainfall, we are running a very similar pattern to this June,” he says.
He says the hot weather should also speed up tasseling.
“You’re going to start to see that rapid, rapid growth where you get an inch per day of growth and you’re really starting to see that corn plant stretch out,” he says. “From a sweet corn standpoint, you probably got a little while to go yet.”
The USDA says corn in the state is rated 71 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 95 percent emerged, 3 percent blooming, and rated 63 percent good to excellent.
Michigan wheat is rated 66 percent good to excellent.
