A domestic disturbance investigation in Ottumwa has resulted in a serious misdemeanor charge
The Ottumwa Police Department responded to the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue at approximately 10:51 p.m. on May 29 following a report of a domestic assault.
According to a criminal complaint, officers were dispatched to investigate a domestic disturbance involving 44-year-old James Hopkins of Ottumwa.
Court records state that the victim was observed with an injury to her upper lip. Hopkins was also reportedly found with an injury to his left hand that was consistent with striking an object.
According to court documents, a witness told investigators that Hopkins struck the victim, causing her injury.
Authorities reported that Hopkins and the victim are in a relationship and live together.
A no-contact order was issued on May 30. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 9.
Hopkins was arrested and booked into the Wapello County Jail. He was later released after posting a $1,000 cash/surety bond.
He is charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury or Mental Illness, First Offense, a serious misdemeanor.
