Many farmers are concerned about what fertilizer might cost this fall.
Josh Hitzhusen grows corn and soybeans near Rockwell in northern Iowa and says he hasn’t looked too close at prices yet.
“I’ve heard some rumors of 32 percent being nearly a dollar a unit (higher) essentially, and yeah it’s daunting because we felt like we paid plenty last year. But we also know that today is a snapshot in time, and a lot of things can change before fall.”
If nitrogen prices don’t come down, he tells Brownfield.
“$640 per ton for 32 percent, that’s going to sting if that happens. So we’re just kind of trying to patiently wait and see if some things develop where we get a little bit of relief on a couple of those things.”
Hitzhusen says fuel prices, which have also been affected by the conflict in the Middle East, are not having a major impact on a per acre basis.
