Utilities United Against Scams is warning consumers about a growing phone scam targeting utility customers with false claims of energy bill refunds.
Scammers are calling residents and claiming they have overpaid their utility bill and are owed a refund. During the call, victims are asked to provide banking or credit card information in order to receive the money.
Consumer advocates stress that legitimate utility companies do not operate this way. If a customer has overpaid on an account, the utility provider will typically apply the credit directly to the account or send a refund check by mail. They will never ask for sensitive financial information over the phone to process a refund.
Officials encourage customers to remain cautious of unsolicited calls, especially those creating urgency or requesting personal financial details. Anyone receiving a suspicious call should hang up immediately and contact their utility provider directly using the number listed on their bill or the company’s official website.
Utilities United Against Scams also reminds consumers never to share bank account numbers, debit card information, passwords, or other personal details with unknown callers.
Consumers who believe they may have been targeted by a scam are encouraged to report the incident to local law enforcement and consumer protection agencies.
