A farmer in north Iowa says a lot of stored grain sold ahead of planting.
Chris Edgington grows corn and soybeans near St. Ansgar.
“We’ve got several soy processing plants in the area, so the soybeans have been moving pretty aggressively. From our area we don’t put as much on rail because of processors, and so that’s moving. The ethanol industry is aggressively going through corn. And northern Iowa has also got a lot of livestock.”
He tells Brownfield that sector consumes corn and soybean meal every day.
“So trucks are moving. I can tell you that you don’t just drive through these plants, you go there and you sit in line with some people. So I would say our sales are certainly not behind. Whether they’re ahead, I don’t know.”
Edgington says not only have farmers been selling this spring, commercials are also moving quite a bit of grain.
