Both the Sigourney and Keota boys competed at the Class 1A District Meet at Oskaloosa Golf Club on Tuesday, May 19th — a day after the original Monday date was washed out by rain. When the Savages finally got on the course, they delivered a performance worthy of the state tournament, finishing second to punch their ticket to state. Keota fought hard but fell just short, bringing their season to a close.
Team Results
East Marshall ran away with the district title at 309, with Sigourney earning the second qualifying spot at 323. Winfield-Mt. Union finished third at 326 to claim the final team berth. Hillcrest Academy finished fourth at 330, Keota and Wayne tied for fifth at 332, East Union seventh at 337, Mount Ayr eighth at 342, Danville ninth at 348, Easton Valley 10th at 357, Marquette Catholic 11th at 359, and WACO last at 364.
Individual Results
East Marshall’s Cody Weaver claimed individual medalist honors with a dominant round of 67. Hillcrest Academy’s Rowan Miller finished second at 74 and East Union’s Zayne Eslinger tied for third at 75 — both advancing to the state tournament as the top two individuals not on qualifying teams.
Jordan Tremmel led Sigourney with a third-place finish overall at 75, recording two birdies. Keota’s Brennan McGuire was one spot behind at 78 with three birdies, just falling short of qualifying as an individual, followed by Wayne’s Ruger Berndt at 79. Winfield-Mt. Union’s Cody Milks and East Marshall’s Jackson Bidwell each shot 80, and Sigourney’s Josh Wyatt also carded an 80 highlighted by an eagle and a birdie — a round that proved pivotal in the team standings.
Sigourney’s Solon Yates finished 19th at 83 with two birdies, and Landon Conrad finished 25th at 85 with one birdie, while Ike Molyneux also shot an 85 to finish 26th. Chase Clarahan rounded out the Savages’ scorecard with a 97.
For Keota, Porter Cave finished 21st at 83, Aspen Galindo 27th at 85, Tucker Sprouse 30th at 86, Jacob Libe 65th at 96, and Blake Baker 70th at 99.
Sigourney Headed to State
The Savages advance to the state tournament on the strength of a balanced team performance in one of the tougher district fields in Class 1A. Tremmel’s third-place individual finish led the way, but Wyatt’s eagle-birdie round of 80 was equally crucial in keeping Sigourney ahead of a crowded pack. After finishing fifth at last year’s state meet, the Savages are returning with unfinished business and their sights set higher.
Keota’s Season Comes to a Close
Keota finished fifth in the team standings at 332, a few strokes away from capturing a team qualifying position. McGuire’s three-birdie round of 78 was a bright spot for the Eagles in what proved to be their final round of the season. Keota’s program can hold its head high after a competitive run through the postseason that included a strong sectional performance and conference championship.
