An alleged assault in Ottumwa left one person with facial injuries and resulted in a serious misdemeanor charge after police responded to a late-night disturbance on Albia Road.
On May 16 at approximately 11:55 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department was dispatched to the 1800 block of Albia Road for a reported assault.
According to a criminal complaint, Thomas Medina intentionally struck the victim with a closed fist while the victim was not looking.
Court documents state the victim suffered a small laceration near his right eye along with swelling severe enough to cause the eye to completely shut. The victim reported Medina’s actions were painful and offensive.
Medina was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. He was later released after posting a $1,000 cash/surety bond.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 4.
Medina is charged with assault causing bodily injury or mental illness, a serious misdemeanor.
