Authorities say a routine booking process at the county jail led to an additional felony charge after contraband was allegedly discovered concealed on an inmate entering the facility.

On May 5 at approximately 9:45 p.m., the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Wapello County Jail regarding a report of contraband inside the correctional facility.

According to court documents, David Horvath, 57, of Ottumwa, had been arrested on a valid warrant and transported to the jail for booking.

Authorities say that during the intake process, Horvath was found to be in possession of a methamphetamine smoking pipe containing methamphetamine residue. Court records state the pipe was concealed in his underwear.

Officials reported that Horvath was then informed he was under arrest for possessing and introducing contraband into a correctional institution.

Horvath is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail on a $5,000 cash/surety bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 15.

Horvath is charged with possession of contraband in a correctional institution, a Class D felony.
