A southeast Iowa man is accused of calling a local store and reporting a fake bomb threat last year.

William McVey, 53, of Ottumwa was charged with false report of explosive or incendiary device, a Class D felony.

According to court records, on November 26, 2025, McVey called the service desk at Hy-Vee on Quincy Avenue in Ottumwa and stated there was an explosive device in the store despite knowing the claim was false.

A warrant for McVey’s arrest was issued on May 13, 2026 and he was taken into custody on the same day.

McVey was transported to the Wapello County Jail and was later released on his own recognizance.

Court documents reveal McVey waived his preliminary hearing and entered a plea of not guilty.
