Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks announced this week that the Fisher House Availability Act has officially passed, marking a significant step toward helping military families stay together during medical treatment.
Miller-Meeks, a 24-year Army veteran and physician, said the legislation removes what she described as unnecessary federal red tape that prevented some military families from accessing Department of Veterans Affairs housing while their loved ones received care outside the VA system.
According to Miller-Meeks, a Biden-era policy restricted families from staying at Fisher Houses when veterans or service members were referred to non-VA medical facilities for treatment. Supporters of the bill argued the rule created added stress and financial hardship for families already dealing with serious medical situations.
The Fisher House Availability Act changes that policy, allowing eligible military families to stay in VA-provided lodging regardless of whether care is received directly through the VA or through outside providers authorized by the department.
Miller-Meeks said the measure is about ensuring veterans and service members have the support of their families during difficult times.
Fisher Houses are often described as a “home away from home” for military and veteran families, providing free temporary lodging near hospitals and medical centers while loved ones undergo treatment.
Supporters of the legislation say the change will help reduce travel costs, ease emotional strain, and improve access to care for veterans and military families across the country.
