Iowa farmer reports strong corn conditions, slow soybean emergence

Steve Kuiper:

Spring planting has wrapped up for south-central Iowa farmer Steve Kuiper.

“We’ve got some spots that we may go patch in a little bit where we’ve had some drowned-out areas or eroded areas. To be determined. We want to kind of wait and see.”

He tells Brownfield soybean emergence has been slow.

“I think everybody has kind of struggled with that this year,” he said. “Soybeans just seem to be struggling to break through the crust and come up. They are emerging over a 10-day period at times. It’s a different year with different climate conditions and soil conditions.”

But Kuiper says corn conditions have been strong, particularly for early‑planted acres, noting planting progress moved quickly once the rains shut off.

“We actually finished earlier this year than we did last year by six or seven days. It went pretty well.”

Kuiper and his family farm near Knoxville in Marion County.
