Iowans will once again have the chance to enjoy the outdoors without needing a fishing license during Iowa’s Free Fishing Weekend, set for June 5-7, 2026.

During the three-day event, residents can fish in any public waters throughout the state without purchasing a fishing license or trout fee. The annual weekend is designed to encourage families, first-time anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts to get out and enjoy Iowa’s lakes, rivers, and streams.

While the license requirement is temporarily waived, all other fishing laws and regulations will still apply. Anglers must continue to follow size limits, daily possession limits, and any lure or equipment restrictions in place at each location.

Officials also remind residents that trout fishing will be included during the event, meaning anglers may legally fish for and keep trout without needing to buy a trout stamp during the free fishing weekend.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources encourages participants to review current fishing regulations.
