Fairfield’s boys tennis program wrapped up its conference season Thursday, May 7th at the Punj Tennis Center in Fairfield, with the Trojans finishing second in the Southeast Conference behind Mount Pleasant — capping a strong campaign that saw them go 6-2 in conference.
The Trojans had swept Keokuk 9-0 on Monday, May 4th to close out the dual meet portion of the season, going 96-14 in points without dropping a set on the day. The final conference standings had Mount Pleasant first at 7-1, Fairfield second at 6-2, Burlington third at 4-4, Fort Madison fourth at 3-5, and Keokuk fifth at 0-8.
Singles
Bowen Zhang was the story of the day in singles, rolling through the bracket without dropping a set on his way to the individual title. The top seed opened with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over eighth-seeded Carter Gehling of Mount Pleasant, then dispatched fourth-seeded Avery Cameron of Burlington 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the championship match, Zhang faced second-seeded Patrick Morgan of Burlington in a tighter contest — falling behind in both sets before keeping his composure and clawing his way back each time — ultimately claiming the title 7-5, 6-4 to earn first place.
Sixth-seeded Max Craver had a resilient day of his own. After falling to third-seeded Rowan Benda of Fort Madison 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, Craver bounced back to defeat tenth-seeded Grayson Walker of Mount Pleasant 8-2 in the consolation bracket and then defeated eighth-seeded Gehling 8-3 in the fifth-place match to claim fifth.
Doubles
The doubles portion of the day featured two upset wins for Fairfield. The second-seeded pairing of Pranit Ruia and Caelan Chang navigated their bracket with confidence, opening with a 6-2, 6-4 win over seventh-seeded Detayvion Pearson and Cameron Anderson of Burlington before falling to sixth-seeded Isaiah Lange and Charlie Syfert of Mount Pleasant 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. Ruia and Chang recovered to claim third place with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Holden Fraise and Elijah Broadhurst of Fort Madison.
The ninth-seeded pairing of Aaron Carlson and Yangyi Zhong provided the upsets of the day, making noise throughout the bracket. They opened with an 8-3 victory over eighth-seeded Marcus Huele and Decker Derr of Keokuk in the pigtail round, then fell to the top-seeded pairing of Sawyer Fulton and Max Heater of Mount Pleasant 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. Carlson and Zhong rebounded to knock off fifth-seeded Cole Livingston and Ian Hanks of Burlington 8-6 in another upset in the consolation bracket before falling to third-seeded Tyce Hoppe and Ryder Keefe of Keokuk 8-1 in the fifth-place match, finishing sixth on the day.
All-Conference and Looking Ahead
Bowen Zhang, Pranit Ruia, and Caelan Chang all earned All-Conference honors for Fairfield.
Head coach Lawrence Eyre reflected on a season that exceeded expectations given the program’s circumstances heading into the year. “Proud of our guys for hanging in there through the tough moments this season. After last year’s team graduated 10 of the 12 guys on the squad, 2026 looked to be a long slog back for the Pioneering Trojans, but these guys have risen to the challenge. It’s been gratifying to see their improvement so far this season,” Eyre said.
With no seniors on the roster, Fairfield figures to return the entire group next season with a legitimate shot at the conference title.
The Trojans now turn their attention to the IHSAA 1A District Singles and Doubles tournament, which Fairfield is hosting Saturday, May 16th at 8:00 a.m. The field includes Assumption, Keokuk, Marion, Mount Pleasant, Central DeWitt, Fort Madison, and South Tama County. Eyre called it a “very challenging district,” noting that conference champion Mount Pleasant will be among the squads making the trip from the north.
