Wapello County Auditor Announces Retirement

In a meeting earlier this month, the Wapello County Supervisors moved to accept the resignation of Wapello County Auditor Kelly Spurgeon.

Spurgeon’s resignation will be effective April 30th. Election Deputy Danielle Weller explained the possible options: the supervisors can appoint a person to take on the role of County Auditor or a special election can be held. If the supervisors choose to appoint a replacement, the decision must be made within 40 days of May 1st, the first day the Auditor’s office becomes vacant.

Citizens can also petition for a special election. The Wapello County Auditor is an elected position and Weller noted the office is up for reelection this November. Therefore, the replacement could potentially serve only eight months.

Spurgeon has been the Wapello County Auditor since 2008. The duties of the auditor’s office include calculating tax rates for all taxable entities, overseeing all elections within the county, and maintaining the county’s financial reports.
