A tornado struck the WACO Community School District campus Tuesday evening, April 14th, causing damage to several structures while a boys soccer game was underway, according to social media reports and statements from school officials. No serious injuries were reported.
WACO was hosting Danville in a boys soccer game at the time of the storm. According to social media reports from community members who were on the grounds, the tornado struck before sirens sounded. One witness reported that the sirens did not sound until approximately ten minutes after the tornado had already hit. Reports indicate there were children playing soccer on the field at the time with no advance warning.
Community members on the scene reported significant damage to several structures on campus. Part of the roof of the new FFA building was reportedly blown off, though the greenhouse is said to still be standing. A grain bin, scoreboard, and press box were reported to be on the ground near or on the football field. Despite the damage, witnesses reported that everyone on the grounds was safe, with only minor bumps and bruises.
WACO Community School District Superintendent Spencer Lueders issued a statement to families Monday evening confirming the damage and praising the response of school staff. “Our Jr./Sr. High School sustained some damage, and out of an abundance of caution, access to the building is currently restricted while we fully assess the situation and ensure it is safe for everyone,” Lueders wrote.
Lueders commended the administrative team for their quick response during the game. “I want to commend our administrative team for their quick thinking and leadership in ensuring the safety of our fans and student-athletes during tonight’s soccer game,” he said.
Despite the damage, Lueders confirmed in a follow-up message that school will proceed as scheduled on Wednesday. “We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community and beyond,” he said. “Our team continues to assess the damages this evening and will be back at it in the morning.”
The district indicated it will share more information for those interested in assisting with cleanup efforts.
