Our dad, Terry W. Derby, earned his eternal rest on April 13, 2026.
Whether you knew him as Derb, Terry, Papa/Pops, Dad #2, or Grandpa Terry, his life was one of purpose, blessed with a sense of humor that could light up even the darkest of rooms. His twinkling eyes and mischievous smile were infectious, and his laughter was a language we all understood. It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to this incredible man, who was always there for us, in the truest sense of the word. Terry was born on October 20, 1954, in Fairfield, IA, to Harold and Peggy Derby. Terry graduated from Pekin High School in 1973. He married the love of his life Janet Conger on August 16, 1975, in Packwood, IA. He was a talented creator, his hands capable of turning the most ordinary materials into architectural masterpieces. Following his passion, Terry founded Derby Custom Building, a custom home building and remodeling business which he ran for over 35 years. His dedication and talent were evident in the homes he built and the lives he touched. His love for his work was truly a sight to behold. He took great pride in his clients trusting him to bring their ideas and dreams to reality. Terry loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Green Bay Packers, and his faithful dogs, Yoda and Sammi. He found joy in cooking, but often did not follow recipes, rather adding his own personal touches. He also enjoyed woodworking, and most importantly being in the company of family and friends. Losing him feels like losing a part of ourselves, but the memories we created together will forever be imprinted in our hearts.
Terry leaves behind his children, Aaron (Laurie) Derby, Nicole Derby, Lindsey (Brian) Derby, and grandchildren Blair and Mason. He is also survived by his siblings Gary, Barb, and Kathy. His love for us was profound, and his teachings, invaluable. We find solace in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved wife Janet and his parents. Terry was a beacon of light in our lives, his spirit as bright as his laughter. His legacy will continue to live on through his children, his family and friends, and his impressive body of work.
