Three area boys golf programs hosted or competed in invitational tournaments Friday, April 24th, with Van Buren County finishing runner-up at the Fairfield Invite and Sigourney defending its title at the Sigourney Invite.
Sigourney Invite at Sigourney Golf and Country Club
Sigourney defended its title at the third annual Sigourney Invite, winning the team competition with a score of 305 on the par-70 course in what the program described as a very talented field. BGM placed second at 308, Don Bosco third at 318, Grand View Christian fourth at 319, Solon JV fifth at 328, North Mahaska sixth at 336, Burlington Notre Dame seventh at 341, Saydel eighth at 360, and WACO ninth at 362.
Leading the way for Sigourney was Solon Yates, who claimed individual medalist honors with a 2-under-par 68 — shooting a 34 on both the front and back nine with six birdies on the day. Yates’s round was described by the program as a big bounce-back performance. Beckett Rhoads of BGM placed second overall with a 75.
Among other Sigourney finishers, Landon Conrad placed eighth with a 78 and two birdies, Jordan Tremmel 13th with a 79 and two birdies, and Ike Molyneux 18th with an 80 and three birdies. Hayden Bensmiller of Sigourney JV placed 19th with an 81. Josh Wyatt placed 26th with an 84 and one birdie, Dayne Chittick of Sigourney JV 36th with a 90 and one birdie, and Chase Clarahan 40th with a 92.
Fairfield Invite at Fairfield Golf and Country Club
Keokuk edged Van Buren County by a single stroke to claim the team title at the Fairfield Invite, shooting a 315 on the par-70 course. Van Buren County finished second at 316, Albia third at 318, Mount Pleasant fourth at 325, Fort Madison fifth at 332, and Fairfield sixth at 333.
Van Buren County’s Leo Jirak turned in the best round among area golfers, placing second overall with a 75 that included two birdies. Aiden Cooper placed fourth with a 77 and one birdie, and Will Cocherell placed sixth with a 78 and one birdie. Ethan Pforts placed 26th with an 86 and one birdie, Jerrod Griffin 29th with a 90, and Cooper Richardson 33rd with a 94.
For Fairfield, Archer Kreuter led the way with a 79, good for ninth overall. Drew Myers placed 11th with an 80 that featured two birdies, and Luke Thornton placed 19th with an 84 and one birdie. Dain Burkhart placed 28th with a 90 and one birdie, Xavier Kessel 34th with a 96, and Liam Hunter 36th with a 108 that included one birdie.
The individual medalist was Colton Spicer of Keokuk, who shot a 71.
