Securing fuel ahead of time helps Iowa farmer manage rising costs

A southwest Iowa farmer says securing fuel early helped him avoid recent price increases.

Duane Aistrope (ay-strope) tells Brownfield, “I booked my fuel for all spring needs and half my fall needs back in January. That was one of the best moves I’ve ever done because I would hate to be buying fuel for the farm right now with the way the prices are.”

He says he monitors price trends year-round.

“I keep a pretty close eye on the market. My fuel supplier also does an excellent job.”

Aistrope says he’s more concerned about fuel costs for the 2027 growing season.

“Hopefully we can catch a window before fall rolls around where I could book some more fuel.”

AAA says the national average for diesel is currently $5.46 per gallon, up from $3.56 per gallon this time last year.
