Pekin High School band and choir students competed Saturday at the Iowa High School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Contest, earning a range of ratings across several performances.
Solos and ensembles are rated on a scale of Division I through Division V, with Division I representing a superior performance, Division II excellent, Division III good, Division IV fair, and Division V poor.
Anna Hadley earned a Division I rating for her flute solo and Natalie Hamilton earned a Division I rating for her vocal solo — both representing superior performances. Gabe Gentry earned a Division II rating for his snare solo and Ava Heisdorffer earned a Division II rating for her vocal solo. Rannen and Tatum Harbison received a Division III rating for their vocal duet, Zoey Atkinson received a Division III for her vocal solo, and Ava Heisdorffer and Zoey Atkinson paired up to earn a Division III rating for their vocal duet.
School officials praised the students for their hard work and courage in performing in front of a judge, noting that the contest provides valuable feedback regardless of the rating received.
In other Pekin news, the school’s Iron Chef team finished third at the Spring Iron Chef competition, which featured an Italian theme. The team’s performance was especially impressive given the closeness of the competition — just five points out of 250 separated first place from third.
